Color Printing Tip: Converting RGB to CMYK

As a graphic designer, doing anything in color requires you to be at least somewhat familiar with the two most common color models: RGB (red, green, blue) and CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black).

Fundamentally, RGB is best for websites and digital communications, while CMYK is better for print materials

It is possible to choose CMYK or RGB for print projects. If you know in advance that your document is intended for a high-quality print job — say, brochures or flyers — explore the settings in the computer program you’re using to see whether you can change the RGB default color mode to CMYK prior to designing it.

RGB and CMYK are color models used for different types of media and have different ways of creating colors.

RGB
Stands for red, green, and blue, and is used for digital media like computer screens, televisions, and smartphones. RGB uses an additive color model, which means that colors are created by mixing light.


CMYK
Stands for cyan, magenta, yellow, and black, and is used for print media like business cards and banners. CMYK uses a subtractive color model, which means that colors are created by mixing inks.

Overcoming the differences between on-screen color and what ends up on the printed page is just one of the issues facing production print shops.

Here are some other differences between RGB and CMYK:

  • White and black: In RGB, white is a combination of all primary colors, and black is the absence of light. In CMYK, white is the natural color of the print background, and black is a combination of colored inks.
  • Color appearance: Some colors may look different on each model. For example, neon or fluorescent colors may look dull when printed in CMYK.
  • Color consistency: CMYK provides the precision and consistency needed for print media.

Understanding the differences between RGB and CMYK is important for ensuring accurate color representation in various mediums.

To convert an image from RGB to CMYK, you can use photo editing software or an online converter:
Photo editing software Programs like Adobe Photoshop and GIMP have built-in tools for converting RGB to CMYK.

Here’s how to convert an image in Photoshop:

  • Open the image
  • Check the current color mode by going to Image > Mode
  • Convert to CMYK by going to Image > Mode > CMYK Color
  • Save the image as a new file with the CMYK colors
